What exactly is branding?

This is a very good questions and there is much controversy about exactly what branding involves. In the Cambridge Dictionary Branding is defined as “the act of giving a company a particular design or symbol in order to advertise its products and services.” And if we were to go back about a couple of decades, this would probably be pretty accurate, but in the modern world it’s considered a pretty outdated definition.

The problem with this definition is that it only concentrates on the aesthetic component otherwise know as the visual identity, i.e. the name, logo, design, packaging, etc. However this is actually only one component of your brand identity.

A more accurate description would be to think of your brand identity as your company’s identity and reputation. Let’s face it, whether you like it or not your company will grow a reputation over time whether it’s a good reputation or bad reputation. This is why we feel it is vital for your company to work on its brand from the very start of your business.

When developing your brand you need to think about advertising, customer service, social responsibility, reputation as well as the visuals which help to reinforce it. Each of these components should work together to create a unique, cohesive, attention-grabbing profile.

You also need to consider people, markets and businesses when creating your brand. All of these entities are constantly changing and therefore your brand must evolve with them in order to stay current and relevant and enhance your users experience.

You must first identify who are your stakeholders. This includes possible clients, existing customers, employees, shareholders and business partners. You then create your brand strategy to position yourself to meet your stakeholders needs. Remember your brand is not static. You must constantly manage everything that could affect your positioning.
